HOW IT ALL STARTED
On Saturday 30 September 2017 an exciting new community event was held in Godalming, a Cyclathon to raise funds for Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care, the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance, and other Rotary Charities. It was organised by the Rotary Clubs in Godalming, and was held in the Godalming Fitness Gym in the High Street throughout that day.
There were of teams of riders from local people, families, businesses, sports clubs and other organisations. There were refreshments, prizes for winners, and a fun event for everyone. And it was all to raise money for these important local charities.
We were kindly hosted by Godalming Fitness Gym (which has been replaced by SnapFitness since 2018). Each team was given a time slot, starting on each hour during the day. Teams could race against each other, measured by the distance covered, or just have fun. Each team raced for 50 minutes and changed riders as they chose. There were prizes for each category.
Our request was that each team raise as much sponsorship as possible. We were hoping for at least £100 per team, and almost all teams beat that target – a tremendous result for our charities.
We also opened up the event to other local charities to enable them to raise money for themselves.
As the big day approached, there was a wide range of publicity, including by Vantage Point magazine. Family, friends and colleagues of the riders joined in supporting Phyllis Tuckwell and the Air Ambulance, and dropped in on the gym during the day to see the teams in action.
